The couples who return to court over children’s expenses usually don’t disagree about supporting their kids. They disagree about:
- What counts.
- Who pays first.
- When reimbursement is due.
- Whether documentation was provided.
- Whether something required prior approval.
Here’s how to build a clean system.
1. Define What “Shared Expenses” Actually Means
Vague language like “reasonable extracurriculars” invites conflict.
Instead, clarify:
- Do deductibles count as shared medical expenses?
- Are orthodontics included?
- Does travel sports require mutual consent?
- Are tutoring and SAT prep shared?
- What about car insurance for teens?
- And college-related expenses?
2. Create a Simple Reimbursement Rule
Every agreement should answer four questions:
- Who pays upfront?
- How are receipts submitted?
- How many days does the other parent have to reimburse?
- What happens if payment is late?
A clean structure looks like this:
- Receipt submitted within 10 days.
- Reimbursement due within 15 days. This is important because non-payment will incur interest at a particular monthly interest rate.
- Payment made via one agreed method (Zelle, Venmo, direct transfer).
- All communication stays in writing.
3. Use One Shared Tracking System (Not Four)
The biggest mistake divorced parents make is mixing text messages, screenshots, email threads, and memory. Pick one system and stick to it.
For lower-conflict situations, a shared Google Sheet or joint expense tracker can work beautifully. Both parents can log expenses, upload receipts, and see running balances in real time.
